Wizarding World of Harry Potter
Pick up a wand. Perform a spell. Make something happen. An interactive proof of concept exploring how camera tracking and gesture recognition could turn physical movements into magical responses.
Making magic recognize you.
Tomorrow Media collaborated on an early proof of concept exploring wand-based interaction for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Our work focused on the experience between moving a wand and seeing a response. We prototyped interactions, tested how people naturally performed gestures and explored how computer vision could make spell-casting feel immediate and intuitive.
The wand is the interface
The starting point was a familiar action: pick up a wand and cast a spell. The prototype explored how that movement could control an experience, without asking visitors to operate a separate controller or wear additional technology.
Turning movement into a spell
Camera-based tracking detected the wand’s movement in real time. Gesture recognition interpreted its path, allowing different movements to represent different spells. The challenge was connecting a physical action with a response the participant could understand.
How people actually move
A gesture drawn on paper is only the beginning. We tested how people naturally performed the movements and explored the feedback needed to connect their actions with what happened next.
Exploring the possibility
This was a proof of concept: an opportunity to explore the interaction, test assumptions and understand what the experience required. Tomorrow Media’s involvement remained at the prototype stage; our team did not take the system into production.
