Scoring For Good

Your phone becomes the football. A mobile throwing game that brought friendly competition to Camp Kesem’s campaign for children affected by a parent’s cancer.

Scoring For Good project

A little competition. A biggercause.

We developed Scoring For Good for Camp Kesem, turning the movement of a phone into a virtual football throw. Players could test their arm, challenge friends and discover the cause behind the competition.

The game formed part of a campaign connecting professional football with support for families facing cancer. Athletes pledged donations tied to their on-field performances, while the mobile experience gave fans a playful way to get involved. Our work brought together motion controls, ball-flight simulation, mobile UI and social challenges.

Put your arm into it

The phone was the controller. Players held their device and made a throwing motion to launch a virtual football. We translated sensor input into ball flight, connecting a familiar physical action with an immediate response on screen. A simple gesture became the whole game.

One more yard

Every throw gave players something to beat. The results screen placed their distance on a football field, making comparisons easy to read. Facebook friend challenges and a leaderboard added a social reason to return: improve your throw, pass a friend and try again.

Play your way onto the team

The campaign brought NFL athletes into the experience. In 2014, C.J. Spiller and E.J. Manuel offered a meet-and-greet prize for the game’s highest scorer. The competition gave fans a place in a wider campaign endorsed by the NFL Players Association.

A summer worth playing for

Camp Kesem offered children affected by a parent’s cancer a free week at camp, with friends who understood what they were going through. The wider Scoring For Good campaign helped support that work through athlete pledges and fan contributions. Spiller pledged $500 for every NFL touchdown in 2014, the stated cost of one child’s week at camp that year.
