Operator11

Your webcam. Your guests. Your show. A live broadcasting platform that put a television control room inside the browser.

Operator11 project

The audience could becomethe show.

We designed and developed Operator11 for internet entrepreneur Josh Harris, giving people the tools to host, direct and join live video shows from their browsers.

Our work covered the interface design and the technology behind it. We brought live feeds, guest controls, recorded clips and audience chat into a browser-based control room that let hosts shape their shows as they happened.

From watching to broadcasting

Operator11 gave anyone with a webcam a television studio in the browser: a live stage, a switcher, guests and an audience, with no broadcast truck in sight.

Direct it live

Hosts could move between webcam feeds and recorded material while the show was running. We developed the Flash and ActionScript experience to bring those controls into the browser, connecting the interface we designed with the demands of live broadcasting.

More than one show

Profiles, friends and show pages gave people reasons to return between broadcasts. Operator11 became a place for talk shows, music, comedy and experimentation, with a community forming around the people on screen.

A studio anyone could use

A television control room has a lot going on. Our job was to make those controls understandable in a browser. We designed the interface around the decisions a host needed to make: who goes live, what plays next and what the audience sees. Camera previews, media libraries, chat and audio controls shared one workspace.
