Combat Racer (white label)
Six players, wild arenas and a serious multiplayer engine underneath. A browser kart battler built for a client we can’t name, illustrated here with questionable drawing skills.
Six players. No time to wait.
We developed and shipped a six-player, free-for-all kart battler that runs directly in the browser. The brief was fast, competitive action, with players sharing an arena where timing and responsive controls matter.
Behind the clashes is a deterministic simulation running at 60 ticks per second. Using Photon Quantum 3, we built the gameplay around synchronized player inputs, local prediction and rollback, keeping the action responsive while the network catches up.
Six players. No time to wait.
A multiplayer kart battler asks a lot of the browser. Controls need to respond quickly, the arena needs to stay readable, and everyone needs to agree on what happened. Our work focused on connecting the moment-to-moment gameplay with a networking approach suited to fast action and the constraints of browser delivery.
Send the inputs
Each player’s machine runs the same gameplay simulation locally. The network distributes confirmed player inputs, allowing each client to calculate how the match unfolds. This keeps routine synchronization compact, reducing the need to continuously transmit the position and state of every moving object in the arena.
Act now, reconcile afterwards
Local prediction lets players see their actions without waiting for a server round trip. As confirmed inputs arrive, rollback revisits earlier simulation steps and recalculates what followed. We built the gameplay to work within that process, so the match can reconcile different players’ actions while preserving responsive local control.
The work behind the disguise
This was a white-label delivery, and the client remains confidential. The illustrations on this page stand in for the game’s original presentation, giving us a way to share the idea and discuss the engineering. Somewhere behind these drawings is a properly built multiplayer game. You’ll have to forgive the drawings.
